Reward poster issued by Secretary of War Stanton six days after the assassination

A short time later, a revised wanted circular was produced under orders from Baker. One would like to believe that the NDP chief hastened to correct the mistakes manifested by the earlier poster, but the revised version was never seen by the public until after the trials of Atzerodt, Herold, Payne, and Mary Surratt. Inexplicably, the new poster contained a photograph of David Herold that was taken after he was captured by the NDP on April 16. The new photograph of John Surratt was made well after April 20, 1865, the date indicated on the poster.

One week following the assassination, Thomas Jones was purchasing supplies at a store in Allen’s Fresh, located two and a half miles east of his farm, where Zekiah Swamp ends and the Wicomico River begins. While he was selecting goods, half a dozen cavalrymen rode into town, entered the store, bought drinks, and gathered around a table in conversation. A few moments later, a scout rode up and approached the soldiers. He told them that he had just learned that their quarry had been spotted in St. Mary’s County twelve miles east of where they sat.

The troopers guzzled their drinks, mounted their horses, and rode away. Looking around, Jones determined that there were no soldiers left in the town. He decided that it was time to get Booth and Henson across the river.
